This is always worth considering when we’re looking at nappies. Oxidation can really change the colour of baby’s poo, so when we’re making assessments made on the colour, it’s important to bear this is mind. These photos were taken as an experiment by a client after she was concerned about noticing her newborn producing greener poos, especially overnight, when potentially the gaps between the poo occurring and the nappy change were greater. Have you noticed this with your baby’s poo? *Green poo

Did you know IBCLC is the highest credential in feeding support? IBCLC is a separate credential to any other health care qualification, some healthcare professionals like Midwives, Health Visitors or GPs will have also undertaken and achieved the credential in addition to support they receive while training. (You can always ask if you’re not sure who’s supporting you with feeding!) IBCLC stands alone in its own right as a qualification, and can also be achieved by those from a non-healthcare bac

NIPPLE SHIELDS Used correctly and with some guidance from an IBCLC or other breastfeeding supporter, nipple shields can help maintain feeding at your breast! They can be a useful ‘Bridge’ while we wait for other things to fall into place. Here’s a quick video that shows a hack for using shields that helps them get a better seal on the breast, and therefore hopefully an improved feed, with less chance of the shield getting knocked off. *You are aiming to get the shield as centrally over your nipp

The current growth charts were introduced in England in 2009, and are based on the measurements of many breastfed babies from 6 countries. Plotting your baby’s weight helps ensure they’re growing as we’d hope and expect. If you need any help understanding your baby’s growth, or are concerned in any way please reach out to your healthcare team. #breastfeeding #normalisebreastfeeding #pregnant #baby #hannahcroftibclc | Hannah Croft IBCLC, Infant Feeding Support

It’s the best, best feeling to get a message like this! Upright positions like these can help with so many aspects of breastfeeding, and the research supports that when mothers are shown biological nurturing positions, there are less breastfeeding issues including less nipple damage. If you’re struggling with uncomfy positioning, squashed nipples or a wriggly, unsettled baby I’d definitely recommend having a go with upright positions to help feeding be more comfy and instructive. Let me know if

It’s really normal during a breastfeed for your baby to have periods of active drinking, and then periods of pausing too. While it’s reassuring to see lots of big swallows which tell us there’s milk transfer happening, it’s also fine to have periods of just suckling, or rest too. Think about how you drink a cup of tea, unless you’re super duper thirsty you don’t gulp it all down in one go. You sip, you swallow and then you might pause even putting your cup or mug down, before returning to more d

Why a wide, open mouth may not need to be the focus in helping your baby latch effectively. Try switching them from horizontal positions to being more vertical on your body. I find it makes a massive difference in breastfeeding comfort, success and sustainability. A recently published paper has looked at the efficacy and scientific research behind the recommendations around burping babies. James et al highlighted the lack of standardised guidelines, and recognises the need for well-designed studies to clarify the role of burping in modern neonatal practice. Burping after feeding is often advised by care providers like paediatricians, nurses, relatives and parenting websites, even though interestingly, the scientific evidence for the efficacy of burping is

P a c e d B o t t l e f e e d i n g Using this method to bottle feed a baby helps feed them responsively, and prevents overfeeding which can lead to discomfort for your baby. It also can help babies move between the breast and bottle. Have you been shown this technique? Did you know IBCLCs can help with all types of feeding, not just breastfeeding? If you need at any stage of feeding your baby, please reach out. #breastfeeding #normalisebreastfeeding #breastfedbaby #breastmilk #breastfeedingjour

Teaching your baby to drink from an open cup is a really useful transferable skill to equip them with. This wonderful video shows Charlotte, nearly 6 months, mastering the skill as an alternative to being offered a bottle. We put a small amount of expressed milk in the cup. The cup Charlotte is using here is suitable from 4 months of age, super easy to clean, and very affordable. They can be a good alternative to introducing bottles. When did your baby start drinking from an open cup? #baby #inf

T H E S P O O N 🥄 Inexpensive, portable and easy to clean. And invaluable if you have a sleepy baby who is proving tricky to latch and feed. How, you may ask? Well, you can hand express drops of colostrum straight onto the clean spoon (you may need someone to hold it) and feed it directly to your baby. Sometimes just a little drop or two is enough to remind the baby how good colostrum tastes, and to give them an energy boost to attempt latching for real! Don’t forget colostrum is tightly packed

Research has shown that using laid back feeding positions are more likely to initiate a newborn’s feeding reflexes, and lead to successful breastfeeding, in comparison to other feeding positions. Research has shown that feeding in the cross cradle position leads to a 4 fold increase in nipple trauma in the early days of breastfeeding…why is this so often the default taught position? Using laid back feeding positions means families can adapt and adjust their positioning according to their own ana

Laid back feeding positions are often my go-to when I’m supporting families with breastfeeding. They can be a lot more instinctive, and come with less ‘rules’ than other positions. ➡️Basically, lean back, and then lean back some more! ➡️Fit baby to your body, and let gravity help you out by holding your baby there. ➡️Let baby lead the way and nuzzle themselves into the perfect position 👌🏻 You can use laid back feeding positions after a vaginal birth, or a c-section. Jelonet can be a really useful tool to promote most wound healing in cracked nipples. It comes in different sizes of dressings, and you can cut these down as needed to make it go further. You ideally need a new piece after each feed. The handy thing about Jelonet is you can really tuck it into cracks, to help create a moist wound healing environment, whereas other treatments tend to sit more on the outside of the nipple. If you’ve used jelonet, please share your experience! #breastfeeding #norma

Being able to identify swallows and therefore milk transfer when your baby is breastfeeding is an essential and empowering skill for breastfeeding parents. It’s easy to think it’s all about the latch, which of course is important, but if your baby isn’t actively swallowing milk during feeds then feeds can be long and inefficient, and your baby’s weight may be impacted. While sleepy, cuddly feeds and comfort sucking are a valuable part of breastfeeding, it’s also vital parents are able to identif

There’s a reason you don’t see breastfeeding ‘wonder products’ being endorsed by reputable IBCLCs. Not only do we have to abide by a strict code of ethical conduct, we’d rather see you invest your hard earned money in support that will empower you to be confident in feeding your baby, rather than gimicky products. Need a hand with feeding your baby? Please get in touch. #breastfeeding #normalisebreastfeeding #breastfedbaby #breastmilk #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedinginpublic #baby #parenting
