Pompeii. The world’s most astonishing historical time capsule. Once a vibrant and sprawling Roman town, it was buried under ash and rock for centuries following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. But the town was almost destroyed a second time – during WWII! Around 160 bombs were dropped on Pompeii in 1943 by the Americans and around 1 in 10 is estimated to be active.
