With thousands of species and over 400,000-acres, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is one of the crown jewels 💎 in our system of protected lands. 🐊 American alligators swim the swamp’s still waters. Wood storks and sandhill cranes frequent the skies. Gopher tortoises find sanctuary in vast underground burrows, providing shelter for hundreds of other species. 🐢 This is a

David DaLie was the OSP’s wildlife manager when it opened in 1946. By the mid-1950s, he was known as Tarzan of the Okefenokee Swamp. He dove from a platform into alligator-infested waters, wrestled alligators, fought bears, and milked rattlesnakes. He traveled all over t

This footage captures a glimpse of the elusive brown water snake. Brown water snakes are similar in appearance to banded water snakes, and cottonmouths, but when you look at them from above, you will notice large, visible eyes close to their nose as well as the row of dark brown squares along their back. There's nothing quite like the sound of a deep alligator bellow. Have you heard any alligators communicating with each other lately? American alligators bellow to establish territory and attract potential mates. Male alligators produce a subaudible vibration (SAV), making water "dance" along their torso. The duration of bellows tends to be shorter in females than males. Check out this video of two of the captive alligator ambassadors at the OSP demonstrating this awesome phenomenon! | Okefenokee
