Modern EMT services in the United States began with Black people. In the late 1960s, Pittsburgh’s Black community created Freedom House Ambulance Service because their lives were being neglected. Police wagons were used as ambulances. People were dying before reaching hospitals. Freedom House changed that. They trained highly skilled Black paramedics, introduced real medical care in the field, and created protocols that became the foundation of today’s EMT system. When it worked, it was taken. F
