A beautiful Luna moth greeted me this morning — how appropriate for National Moth Week @mothweek! Seeing a North American Luna Moth (Actias luna) is rare due to its brief adult stage (7-10 days) & nocturnal flying times. Sadly, this one probably got confused by a bright yard light. Luna moths are part of the subfamily Saturniinae — the giant silk moths group. During its short adult life, these moths don’t eat, instead focusing on mating while surviving off fat stores from their caterpillar stage
