The Japan Meteorological Agency's (JMA) Himawari-8 satellite captured this rapid scan imagery of what is now Typhoon Lionrock in the western Pacific Ocean south of Japan on August 24, 2016. This imagery, which comes to us courtesy of our partners at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), provides a scan of weather events like typhoons every 2 minutes and 30 seconds, and offers us a glimpse of the kind of imagery we'll be able to obtain with NOAA's GOES-R satellite. This full-disk infrared imagery from the Japan Meteorological Agency's Himawari-8 satellite shows both Typhoon Sarika (left) and Typhoon Haima (right) in the Northwest Pacific Ocean over a 24-hours period from about 19:00 UTC on October 16, 2016, to 18:30 on October 17.) According to information from the Joint Typhoon warning Center, Typhoon Sarika is located approximately 409 miles east-southeast of Hanoi, Vietnam, and has tracked northwestward at 9 miles per hour (mph) over the past six hours.
