In August 1979, the greatest disaster in ocean racing history took place when a huge storm hit the Fastnet race. When a 79-year-old male fell and sustained injuries at sea while taking part in the Fastnet Race, an HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter was mobilised and reached the vessel within 30 minutes.
