Legendary Royal Navy test pilot Capt. Eric Melrose “Winkle” Brown flew captured examples of the Luftwaffe’s frontline fighter, the Messerschmitt Bf 109G. Brown noted the 109 had superb climb and acceleration, with a powerful engine that made it a formidable interceptor. However, he also judged it to have a cramped cockpit, heavy control forces at speed, and narrow landing gear that made takeoffs and landings hazardous. In his words, it was “a killer in combat, but a tricky little brute to fly.”
