High up in the Droop Mountains, West Virginia for the annual reenactment. This was another battle the Confederate defenders would have won if they hadn't been outnumbered by a bunch of foreign-born Union "Yankees." On November 6, 1863, atop the 3,100-foot-high ridge of Droop Mountain — now West Virginia’s first state park (established 1928) — one of the war’s highest-elevation battles unfolded. Roughly 1,700 Confederates under Brig. Gen. John Echols and Col. William L. “Mudwall” Jackson held a s
