Move over, PlayStation Portal—a new Sony handheld is seemingly in the works. But could it compete with the Nintendo Switch or Valve's Steam Deck?

Sony is reportedly working on a PlayStation handheld that can play PS5 games, but like Xbox's planned device, it's years away.

Sony is currently in the "early stages of developing" an all-new handheld PlayStation device that would allow users to play PS5 games on the go, a report from Bloomberg claims. Sources speaking to the outlet under anonymity said the device is "likely years away" from release and warned it may never actually make "it to market".

Little else is known about the project right now, but Bloomberg reports that sources familiar with the device say it’ll compete against Nintendo’s Switch and the final version of the Xbox handheld that's currently being prototyped.

Sony will be building on the design of the PlayStation Portal device for its handheld console, according to Bloomberg. According to the publication's sources, the Portal,

Bloomberg have reported that Sony has a new handheld console in early development, which will allow PlayStation fans to play their PS5 games on the go. This is a true handheld, scrapping the game streaming features of the PlayStation Portal. Games will run natively on the console, much like the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

It’s not too late for the major console makers to make a handheld, but reports note a PlayStation handheld may still be years away.
