Multiple people were feared dead in a crowd crush at the world’s largest religious gathering in India on Wednesday, as tens of millions of devotees went to bathe in a river on one of the most sacred days of a Hindu festival.

Dozens of worshippers are feared dead and many more injured following a stampede or crush Wednesday at the massive Kumbh Mela religious festival in northern India, according to officials.

A tragedy unfolded in the wee hours of Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. A stampede took place with fears rising that several have been killed or injured in the crowd rush.
