Lander was escorting someone out of immigration court when ICE agents detained him, according to his campaign spokesperson.

New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was dragged from the hallways of a Lower Manhattan immigration court and detained by masked ICE agents on Tuesday. It is still unclear if Lander will be charged with anything.

The deployment aims to bolster ICE's capacity by allowing law enforcement to focus on frontline duties, the Pentagon said.

Julia Salazar, a state senator representing Brooklyn and Queens, said the arrest is “more evidence that ICE agents are flagrantly breaking the law.” State senator Gustavo Rivera, who covers the Bronx, said it is another example of “fascist overreach from ICE.”

Mr. Lander, the New York City comptroller and a candidate for mayor, was handcuffed as he tried to steer a man past Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
