VILLANOVA, Pa. (WKYT) - Eastern Kentucky dropped a heartbreaker to Villanova on Saturday, 22-17, in the first round of the FCS Playoffs. The Colonels (8-5, 6-2) saw their five-game win streak end as the Wildcats held EKU scoreless in the second half to advance in the postseason.

At its 17, Watkins was pressured by linebacker Frank Lee, who appeared to poke the ball out, defensive lineman Jeremiah Bailey scooping and rumbling 30 yards for a touchdown. But video review overturned the call, saying Watkins’ arm was moving forward, trying to shovel toward a receiver.

EKU hasn’t won a game in the FCS playoffs since 1994. The Colonels have lost their last eight games in the national postseason. Most recently, EKU dropped a 2022 first-round game that it hosted against Gardner-Webb. Before making the FCS playoffs in 2022, EKU had last competed in the national postseason in 2014.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. The winner gets a trip to San Antonio to take on No. 6 seed Incarnate Word, which received a bye.
