By Max Hunder KYIV, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Ukraine's new defence minister promised a sweeping, data-driven overhaul of Europe's largest military to reward commanders achieving results on the battlefield and give Ukrainian forces the upper hand against Russia's bigger and better-equipped army.

The hypersonic Oreshnik intermediate range ballistic missile hit Ukraine’s western Lviv region late Thursday night, although officials there did not mention any casualties. The area is near a military base in neighboring Poland, a NATO member, that serves as a key hub for ferrying Western military supplies to Kyiv.

Ukraine is using drone-based kill zones and attrition tactics to exhaust Russia’s offensive, forcing Moscow to adapt with robots and small-unit assaults.

With the sides far apart on key issues as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches the four-year mark, analysts say the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II is unlikely to end in 2026.
