The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. has died from injuries received in the Magic City Classic last month. Burnett, 20, was pronounced dead Wednesday at 5:43 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

Update on Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett Jr. The originalversion of this story has since been retracted by the university’s athletic department. The school sent out a second statement that the initial news of Burnett’s death was inaccurate.

Alabama A&M retracted an earlier announcement that redshirt freshman linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. had died. The school said it was initially alerted

"We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information," Alabama A&M University's athletics department said.

Linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. sustained a head injury in an October game against Alabama State and has been hospitalized since.

Alabama A&M retracted its previous statement saying Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker on its football team, died Wednesday. He "remains alive."
