The world’s oldest known wild bird, 74, makes an annual pilgrimage to the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. But each year it seems less probable that Wisdom, who has outlived her species’ average lifespan by more than 30 years,

Like other Laysan albatross, officials said, Wisdom returns to the same nesting site at Midway each year to reunite with her mate and potentially lay an egg. Wisdom is identified by her leg band, Z333. Laysan albatross, or moli in Hawaiian, do not typically lay eggs every year, and when they do, they lay only one.

Wisdom was first identified and banded by biologists after she laid an egg at Midway Atoll in 1956. As albatrosses do not lay eggs before the age of five, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service now estimates her age to be at least 74 years old.
