New York's governor is pleading with unions whose workers serve North America’s largest commuter rail system to return to the negotiating table, saying she'll provide refreshments if they'll work to end a 2-day-old strike.

Customers were advised to ride the Ronkonkoma-bound 4:10 p.m. to Jamaica and transfer to other Long Island destinations there.

As the LIRR strike enters its second day Sunday, the 300,000 commuters who use the service each day will have to rely on a pastiche of bus routes to get in and out of New York City.

While the LIRR work stoppage has caused a mess for people heading to weekend events​, the real concern is Monday morning's commute.

A track fire in New York Penn Station is forcing a number of LIRR trains to either be canceled or be diverted to Grand Central Station as of early afternoon Thursday, the FDNY said. According to the fire department,

There will be no Long Island Rail Road service in and out of Penn Station Thursday night after feeder cable fire there earlier in the day.

The problem could be especially pronounced Sunday, since the MTA's accessible shuttle buses will only run on weekdays.
