A volcanic eruption on a remote Indonesian island has killed three hikers. Authorities say about 20 climbers set out Thursday to ascend Mount Dukono on Halmahera Island, ignoring safety restrictions.

Mount Dukono erupted at 7.41 a.m. local time, sending a plume of ash around 10 kilometers into the sky.
