The rain is creating slick and dangerous conditions on roads and freeways across Southern California for early morning commuters.

Christmas week turned chaotic as a powerful storm unleashed flooding, mudslides and evacuations, triggering a state of emergency from mountain towns to major cities.

Emergency evacuations and water rescues were underway in San Bernardino County on Wednesday morning, December 24, as heavy rain caused “life-threatening” flash flooding across California.According to the National Weather Service (NWS),

A 74-year-old man died after water entered his vehicle amid flooding in California. Officials throughout the state are bracing for more wet weather.

Redding Mayor Mike Littau said in a Facebook post that a person alerted 911 when they became stuck and water entered their vehicle. Though a Redding police officer was able to swim to the vehicle, break the windows, bring the individual to shore and perform CPR, the person did not survive, and an investigation into a cause of death is ongoing.
