Canada’s Leylah Fernandez secured one of the biggest wins of her career as she defeated Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2 to lift the DC Open title in Washington.
Williams could not overcome 27-year-old Magdalena Frech, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of the tournament on Thursday, July 24. Williams has not won back-to-back matches since 2019. Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste won their first-round match in doubles play on Monday, but the duo fell short of reaching the third round.
The Australian had his back against the wall and saved three championship points for Fokina in the third set to force a tournament-deciding tiebreak, which de Minaur won 7-3. Trailing five games to four in the third set on the verge of getting broken for the loss, de Minaur served to Fokina with the title in the balance.
