President Donald Trump is set to hold a media event with Elon Musk, a key architect of the Department of Government Efficiency, on Friday afternoon at the White House as the tech billionaire concludes his tenure as a "special government employee.

Elon Musk announced Wednesday that he's wrapping up his time as a "special government employee" with the Trump administration. A senior administration official says Musk "will continue to be a friend to the president.

Elon Musk is stepping away from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency and publicly broke with President Donald Trump’s massive spending bill in his last few hours in the administration.

Musk announced his departure a day after an interview clip showed him saying Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill “undermines” DOGE.

Musk took on his role as Trump’s self-styled “first buddy” with a pledge to reduce government spending by $2 trillion. He moved the goalposts on the job, and said in April he expected to trim $150 billion by the end of the 2026 financial year.

Elon Musk exits the White House, leaving investors hopeful that he will renew focus on his companies, Tesla and SpaceX. Mr. Musk gave nearly $300 million in contributions to the U.S. presidential election campaign.
